We're proud to announce that Grant's Golden Brand Pomade is now available in Milwaukee - at gents-only barbershop Stag, to be specific. Opened in November 2010, this "old school barbershop for the modern man" offers precision haircuts and straight razor, hot towel shaves. The atmosphere is a coherent mix of old and new. Alongside espresso machines, a leather couch, and stainless steel accents, you'll also find barn wood shelves and antique barber chairs. But what really adds another dimension of character to the barbershop's style is the tribute to the owner's late father Rick Stern, the man behind the face of the barbershop: the caribou (stag) Rick Stern shot in Toronto over 20 years ago, an antelope from Wyoming that also belonged to him, a chandelier the owner and her mother made from an antler he had in the basement.
Owner Jess Stern (pictured in the barber chair above) is a Milwaukee native and an internationally trained precision mens' barber with over 10 years' experience. She was also a Milwaukee Brewcity Bruiser Rollergirl. We have to admit we're not completely familiar with this role, but it sounds like it was fun times. Jess was more than gracious to tell us a little more about the barbershop:
My dad is the logo as you know. I was going through photos after he passed away. I found the photo that the logo was designed after and thought "when I open a shop, this is my logo." Two months later I found the space. The ironic thing is that I had been looking for a space for years and I stumbled upon one that was once an old barbershop in the 40s. The landlord's father had started the barbershop, and then he took it over after his father passed away. When he retired he leased the space to multiple business owners, none of which were barbers. I am happy to say that I have brought the space back to its roots. My mom, Sandy Stern, and I did a lot of the build out. Although I am the sole owner, I could not have done it without her. She helped me in creating a place that feels like home to not only myself, but to everyone who walks through the door. It's a place I am truly proud of. The vibe is so comfortable that I never feel like I am going to work. My barbers and I make an effort to know everyone's name. Every man is greeted with a smile and a handshake.
And that's the way it should be. So "be a man, go to Stag."

It's Spring so rain's not unusual but it feels like it's still winter here. So ironically we're envying people in old black and white photos that are presumably basking in the sun and blue skies.
(My girl found these images off a blog - photo of girl in mexico from Albert Tanquero, other images from either the Snaptorium or Tastevik flickr pools).

Grant's Golden Brand Pomade is now available at The Kings Club Barbershop.
Outside, an antique barber pole. Inside, jazz sounds and barbers dressed in smock and tie snippin', clippin' and shaving their clients' hair with an uncompromising attention to detail. The Kings Club Barbershop is part throwback, part social club, and 100% barbershop. Since buying the shop four years ago, owner Mike Swenson, along with head barber Scott Young, have carried on the tradition local clients have been enjoying at this location since 1963. “We are not trying to reinvent the wheel here, but instead deliver a classic American barbershop experience including razor-sharp haircuts and hot towel shaves,” said Swenson.
